Financial Law – SKAT
The main institution in Denmark which deals with public and private financial regulations is SKAT (Danish Tax Agency), which is an agency under the Ministry of Taxation. SKAT works in collaboration with other agencies in the Ministry of Taxation.
In Denmark, where the public sector is financed by taxes and duties, the tax system and its administration play a crucial role. Without the combination of solid tax rules on the one hand and the collection and steady flow of revenues on the other, it is not possible to provide the revenues that form the foundation of the public service of the Danish State, regions, and municipalities.
As an expat you will need to get in contact with the SKAT authorities at least once after you settle in Denmark, and usually, that is when you make the so-called “tax card“. While it is not a physical card, it is a very important thing to take care of, especially when you are employed or self-employed.
We help expats with this procedure when they arrive in Denmark, as well as checking their preliminary income assessment (which generally represents an assessment of what you will earn in the year ahead) and their tax assessment notice ( which is released by SKAT every spring and it represents the calculation of your final tax accounts for the past year).
When starting a small or larger business, you might also need help navigating the tax requirements, and that is a service we provide through our business packages, which are tailored for start-ups and small business owners.
