The European elections taking place this upcoming weekend, 23-26 May 2019, is giving all adult EU citizens the opportunity to select who will represent them in the European Parliament.

If you are thinking to cast your vote from Denmark as a non-Danish citizen you have two options: to vote for the country of your nationality or the country of your residence.

If you have chosen to vote for a Danish candidate to the European Parliament you will be able to do so on the 26th of May. However, you need to have previously registered yourself as a voter in Denmark, which could have happened at the last European elections in 2014 or by submitting a registration form to your municipality of residence (the deadline for that was 23rd of April 2019). Once you are on the list to vote for Danish candidates you are not allowed to vote for the candidates which represent your country of nationality anymore.

In Denmark, the voting day is 26th of May and voters in Denmark have to vote in a specific polling station based on their home address. You can see which polling station you should go to on the ballot you have received by post from your municipality.

Voters in Denmark will elect 14 MEPs in 2019, one more than in the 2014 elections. Of the 14 elected, 13 will take their seats after the election and the remaining one following the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU. You can find a list of the candidates here.

If you have chosen to vote for the candidates from your country of nationality there are some common rules regarding the elections but some aspects can vary by country, such as whether it is possible to vote by mail or from abroad.

Most EU countries have arranged for polling stations in Copenhagen and a few also have them in other big cities in Denmark. However, some have opted to only allow voting through post mail. The dates on which the elections take place can also differ from country to country. For example, Italian nationals can vote on the 24th and 25th of May, while other countries have chosen to open the polls only on the 26th of May.
